Lets Join the 60 Earth Hour

Today let start to be Environmental and join the worldwide event that will gonna happen this coming March 29, 2008, The “Earth Hour” where participants will be going to turn-off their electricity consumption, not just the lights between 8:00pm to 9:00pm to conserve power and to lower our carbon footprints. So as I sign up and join the events I’m going to turn-off all the electrical Equipments in my house and stay at the backyards and play with my son. So I guess it’s not just conserving electricity but at the same time spend some quality time for your family. Actually here in Vancouver most of the Restaurant offer a candle light dinner for their customers, which is cool and sweet. And I guess it was also a big savings for your wallet having a candle light dinner date in a not so expensive restaurant, instead in Fine Dining big time restaurant.

So if you are a bit late what’s hip today here’s a tidbit of info about Earth Hour:

“On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off, and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydneysiders, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement.

On March 29, 2008 at 8 p.m., join millions of people around the world in making a statement about climate change by turning off your lights for Earth Hour, an event created by the World Wildlife Fund.”

  1. Sign up for Earth Hour 2008
  2. Get involved and create a bigger, better Earth Hour
  3. Reduce your impact on climate change
  4. Create your own Earth Hour event
  5. Know your footprint and challenge your friends

ASUS EAH3850 Trinity – Three GPUs in One Card

asus eah3850 trinity_1

Everybody knows CrossFireX would bring new multi-GPU setups, but what you did not expect anyone can actually use more than two cores with a single card. ASUS proved it, with their latest EAH3850 Trinity is a tri-core card. It has three RV670 cores cooled by a heatpipe construction and a water block, all in a single card. As you can see, ASUS has chosen to use a kind of modular design where the two cores are located on the back and one on the front, each on their own daughter card. The cores are directly cooled by heatsinks and heatpipes that transfers the heat away from the cores to the heatsink located in the rear of the card, which in turn is cooled by a water block. Added, Four DVI ports which can be used with up to four monitors, when CrossFire is deactivated. Along with the card comes a big water cooling unit which is fitted into two empty 5.25″ slots.

Unfortunately by this time, The card is still just a concept and it hasn’t been decided when or if it will be released and nobody sure if this gonna work. When benchmarks with the card will surface remains to be seen, but keep an eye open the upcoming weeks.

So for now let our eyes enjoy in the pictures below:

Here is another story from the book “Our Daily Bread” that I like to share to you guys.  BTW you can oder the book for free and delivered right to your door step at www.rbc.org (please check availability at your location). Cool eh!

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina put New Orleans underwater. But unlikely event gave the city a new lease on life just 17months later. The New Orleans Saints, a perennially woeful football team, made a run at the Super Bowl championship. The whole region grasped the excitement. Signs saying “We Believe” reflected a new day.

Commenting on the phenomenon, producer Quint Davis said, “When the season is over, the miles of devastation are still going to be devastated.” But he added, “If this can be happen for New Orleans, this miracle, then anything can happen for New Orleans.”

The saints fell one game short, but the idea remained enticing. An “impossibility” had so captured the hearts of a people, they began thinking anything was possible.

In an infinitely more important way, this is what we have in Jesus’ bodily resurrection from the dead. Christ defeated death mortality’s own turf, declaring the power of God to give us new life and hope. Paul wrote, “He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you (Rom. 8:11).

No other event in human history is more significant. No other event is so full of immediate hope and ultimate victory for the saints in Christ Jesus. -Mart De Haan.

Jesus Christ today is risen,

And over death triumphant reigns;

He has burst the grave’s strong prison,

Leading sin herself in chairs. -Luther

Christ resurrection is the bud of promise-our resurrection is the flower of fulfillment!

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who…has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. -1Peter 1:3

Remember Me

Today is Good Friday, as a Christian this day is the very important part for my Christian Faith. So, as I take a pause and make some soul searching and reviving my Christian faith. Let me share to you this story what I read in a book “Our Daily Bread”.

Matthew Henshaw got his name into Guinness Book of World Records in an unusual way. After swallowing a 15.9-inch sword, Henshaw attached a 40-pound sack of potatoes to the handle of the sword and held it for 5 seconds (This is not recommended).

Henshaw and others like him have gone to extraordinary lengths to have their names memorialized in the world’s most famous record book. The longing for immortality compels people to do many things-some remarkable, and some bizarre.

The immortality Jesus offers has nothing to do with anything we do.In fact, after giving His disciples the authority to do truly remarkable things Jesus said, “Do not rejoice… that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven”

At Golgotha, an unnamed thief beleif that the message just in time (Luke 23:40-42). He understood that the eternal life had nothing to do with what he had done-good or bad. It had to do with what Jesus was doing-giving His own life so that even the undeserving could be welcomed into heaven by God. The important thing is being remembered not by others, but by God.

Bearing shame and scoffing rude,

In my place condemned He stood,

Sealed my pardon with His blood:

Hallelujah, what a saviour!-Bliss

Processor Wars Heat Up

dunnington Processor Wars Heat Up

After months of delays, Advanced Micro Devices’ quad-core Barcelona chip will become generally available in April, but a newly announced six-core processor developed by rival Intel will force AMD to play catchup once again.

Intel on Monday said a six-core processor code-named Dunnington will be available in the second half of this year. AMD, meanwhile, will ship Barcelona to partners later this month, making it broadly available from resellers sometime in April, AMD vice president of commercial business Kevin Knox told Network World this week.
“Barcelona is a step up but it’s really too late,” says Gartner analyst Martin Reynolds. “They needed Barcelona in the second half of last year.”
Barcelona, the code name for AMD’s newest Opteron processor, is in limited availability and being used mostly in high-performance computing facilities such as the Texas Advanced Computing Center and the Holland Computing Center at the University of Nebraska.

Intel has had quad-core Xeon processors on the market since early 2007 and in September unveiled the Xeon 7300 quad-core chips, which are designed for high-end servers with four or more processors.

Even with Barcelona hitting general availability, AMD’s performance lags behind Intel in processor speed and bandwidth utilization rates, according to Reynolds. “It’s going to be Intel winning the performance battle for the next year and a half,” he says. “But you can never count out AMD and we’ll see what they deliver in 2009.”

Knox says AMD’s newest chip will deliver better performance than Intel, and that new instructions at the chip level will enable virtualized workloads to operate more efficiently on the processor. Customers will see a sizable improvement in price performance per watt, he says.

“We’ve gone from dual to quad-core while maintaining the same thermal envelope,” Knox says. “This is more than just quad-core. It is a significant re-architecture of Opteron, the most significant since we’ve introduced it.”

Newbies Guide: DIY BlowHole

Having an extra fan is the best and easy modding we can do in our PC for newbies like us in the PC Modding business, but the tools and experience still necessary to keep safe and successful. And extra hole is not just for aesthetic purposes, but the principles here apply equal airflow improvements, such as side panel inlets. Get out of premod hell with the aid of a minimal toolkit, experience and have your fans exactly where you want them!

Now, let’s get down to the hole cutting business! I’m only going to cover making the hole in this post so I can give a bit more detail. I’ll get to mounting the fan and fitting up with sleeves. You will need some easy to acquire tools for making the hole cut:

Tools Needed:
* Variable speed drill (preferably a cordless type)
* Permanent marker
* Masking, drafting, or painter’s tape
* Hole saw with bit/arbor/jig (if required)
* Eye Protection
* Measuring device (a ruler will work, a square is better).

Checklist:
You want to make sure the hole saw is the right size. Fans are often measured in millimeters (and to the outside of the casing) and holes saws are often measured in a far superior form of measurement – the inch. Here’s a handy table for convertin’ fan size to proper hole saw size:

50mm = 2.25”
80mm = 3.0” (3 1/8” if you can find it)
92mm = 3.5”
120mm= 4.5” (4 5/8” may also work)

Most important, make sure that the saw you buy or use is labeled “multi-purpose” or “for metal and wood”. Bi-metal saws are best. Some hole saws are only made for wood – you don’t want to use those. You also want to do a bit of research. Hole saws are all of similar design, however, some are far better in quality of materials than others. Further, the arbor and bit (sometimes called a jig) are typically interchangeable among different hole saw sizes – but only within the same brand and series! That means, you will want to stick with a brand – it will save you money in the long run.

Once you have your tools ready, pull the components out of your case (or the part of the case you are going to cut if it’s removable). Cutting a hole into a fully assembled computer is asking for damage. With the case empty, find where you want to put your hole and measure off to mark the center. Keep in mind that components will eventually be in the case. If the hole is on top, for example, make sure you will have room to install the fan while both a PSU and a top bay mounted optical drive are in it. Once you have the center spot marked, you will want to put tape anyplace the blade of the hole saw will cut through. This will minimize any scratching if you slip. Finally, make sure the case is secured somehow and won’t move while you are drilling/cutting. Put on your safety glasses!

Let’s Modding Begin!!!

Cutting / Drilling:
Time for the fun stuff. It’s best to drill the center (pilot) hole first. You can either use a different bit of the same size, or simply pull the saw off the hole saw assembly and use the arbor bit. This way you can see what you are drilling. Your drill should be set to “clockwise” rotation. You will need only enough pressure on the drill to control it. Start slow until you have a divot, and then speed up the drill to about half max. Let the bit do the cutting.

Once you have your pilot hole, the rest is pretty easy – just cut the hole with the saw. Use a moderate speed and don’t push on the drill. Let the saw do the cutting. In fact, the weight of the drill is often too much pressure, so you may find yourself pulling it back. If you stop or the saw jams, simply pull it away from the cut, start it spinning again, and then begin cutting again. If you have never used a hole saw before, consider practicing on a piece of (well secured) scrap wood.

Pretty easy. Take a look into the case and you’ll know why you don’t do this on an assembled computer – that’s not dust – one of those little shavings on a motherboard could cause all kinds of trouble. Now you just have to dress up the hole. The edges will be very sharp and may have metal splinters or burrs (ouch) so be careful. You can use a piece of sand paper (wear a thick glove) or an attachment on a roto-tool for the job. Oh…and despite the temptation, leave the tape on until you are completely finished. Cleaning up is a matter of removing any remaining tape, vacuuming the swarf & filings out of all the crevices, and then giving it a wipe over with a damp cloth.

Fitting Up:
This is the quickest, easiest and most satisfying bit. Check the direction of flow of your fan (it will either be marked, or in general, air flows from the better looking side to the ugly side), then hold your fan in place on the inside, the grill on the outside, and screw together. You may well end up needing three hands for this! I used half inch #12 self-tapping screws, as they go straight into the fan without any need to mess about with nuts & spanners. I used standard edging strip, as otherwise the edge of the hole would have been exposed. With modern fan grille designs it may not be necessary, and may even get in the way. If you end up not using it, consider painting the cut edge to match your case: details count.

As this was a 3-pin fan, wiring in consisted of plugging it in to a spare header on the motherboard. Always check the power rating of the fan, and if it’s more than 2 watts, check your manual to see if your header can provide enough power without burning out. Other wiring options are depend on you: if the fan has a 4-pin Molex / Berg connector, plug it into your PSU, you might want to put a simple switch in the circuit too, or build / use a baybus or rheobus, and so on.

And that’s it, One Blow hole at a time.

Happy Moddin’!
