I read a news today that aware me the posibility of my computer vulnerabilty to virus. Due to rampant fake MP3s, mostly on P2P networks, such as Gnutella used by Limewire. Though the possibility for me is not that risky for I’m not using a P2P in my computer for downloading MP3, instead I’m using the power of Google search engine.
According to the news hundreds of media files was also uncovered being used to trap the downloader, once you click the download button it will lead you to freemp3player.com, but others lead to different sites distributing adware and other pose as a codec installers that when run, display a fake error messages and download and starting to install silently tons of tons of dirty files, including many different adware packages, such as the following list below:
Adware-BB
Adware-Beginto
Adware-Isearch
Adware-Mirar
Adware-SrchExplorer
Adware-Zeno
Domains linked to from the media files include:
mediaprovider . info
missing-codecs . com
seonomad . com
vidscentral . net
While sometimes a user’s must accept a EULA before proceeding, others contain no EULA at all.
Better always be aware where are you surfing and know what you are dealing on when you are on the P2P networks. I can say to be safe is to follow your instict, when in doubt dont click it. I recommend Google search engine is the best alternative for finding a free MP3 files on the net and so far it was safe.
